What It Is That Is Causing An Increase In Touchpad Price

Once upon a time, a few years ago, stand-alone touchpad devices were a kind of unseen technology that consumers had no interest in. For notebook computers, cheap touchpad hardware, with only one function (single–finger tracking), causing an unenjoyable user experience; forming the many bad experiences that consumers often faced with touch pads.

The new wave of touchpad technology

Now, in the face of the touchpad revolution, hardware manufacturers are producing far greater touchpad devices, that completely surpass all forms of old touchpad technology. However, there is just one issue that manages to get in the way of all of the advantages that the consumer is to gain with newer, gesture-based touchpad technology. And that problem, is touchpad price.

Multitouch hardware

In order to produce greater user experience from the touchpad, manufacturers had to look for a greater way of using the device itself. The answer, in essence, was to produce a touchpad that allowed multiple fingers at once to be placed on the touchpad, and therefore recognised. As a result, software has been developed that takes advantage of such multitouch capability, and translates it into gesture-based controls. These gestures form part of a new age of user experience and navigation within contemporary operating systems.

The one downside to this new, multitouch functionality of modern touch pads, is that the price of the touchpad itself has to be raised as a result of the touchpad technology being implemented into the hardware. More expensive production costs, and more expensive design processes, have led to the touchpad price being raised. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, has better value for money has been achieved, especially over the old-style cheap and nasty touchpad devices that were once found in the notebooks from over a decade ago.

Better materials, higher price

Manufacturers of touchpad devices having just stopped at improving the user experience to providing gesture-based controls. They've also sought to make the user experience of the trackpad, much more enjoyable and ergonomically viable. As a result of improving touchpad ergonomics, better materials, with a more natural feel and glide have been used on the touchpad hardware.

Pioneers in the field of touchpad technology, such as Apple, have used manufacturing processes that incorporate the most natural–feel material possible. For example, a glass substrate over the top of Apple's touchpad device has not only enhance the accuracy of the touchpad itself, but also totalled into a far greater, and more naturally feeling, user experience.

New features, further hikes

As manufacturers focus more and more on gesture compatibility and the feel of the touchpad devices, developments will be made to further improve touchpad and trackpad hardware. However, it is clear that the trend of improving such hardware has an effect on the overall price of the touchpad technology.

This touchpad price is something that seems set to raise for as long as manufacturers decide to produce more interesting and more usable hardware. Ultimately, the consumer shouldn't mind having to pay a little bit extra cost, as a touchpad is sure to be the main way of using a modern computer for years to come.
