What's So Great About The External Touchpad?
For many people, the desktop PC and computer mouse combination has been the only practical application in using computer technology at home. It is the same setup that consumers have been content with for the many years that desktop PCs have been running in the consumer electronics market.
However, more recently, a competitor to the generic computer mouse has emerged. It's one that you would find in almost every notebook computer, and it isn't normally preferred over the computer mouse: the touchpad. But what is it that is so great about using an external touchpad with your desktop PC? The heart of the answer lies within the fact that the external touchpad can deliver much more than a computer mouse in modern operating systems.
More recently, operating systems have taken a turn in focus from application and visual complexity, to simple, minimalist functionality and usability. In most recent updates (namely Apple Computer's OS X lion), the supreme transfer of software and hardware gestures from mobile computing devices into desktop PCs has caused a great resurgence in touchpad hardware. So much so, that the touchpad is even being used as an external device and replacement to the desktop computer mouse.
Part of the reason why the external touchpad is becoming so much greater than the standard computer mouse is due to its natural feel and ergonomic nature. This has been achieved, in part, by using more ergonomically sensitive materials, and a larger surface area on the trackpad itself. As a result, greater accuracy is achieved, and consumers are able to take advantage of advancement in hardware technology through using gestures within the operating system controls.
With gestures and a natural feel of external touch pads being the main focus of the switch from the computer mouse, it is clear why many consumers may wish to use an external touchpad as their only form of navigation within their desktop PC's interface. Not only this, but is now even seen as a more fashionable idea to have an external touchpad alongside your keyboard, rather than a cumbersome computer mouse.
There are a few types of computer users that will miss out on the switch to the external touchpad. For example, graphic designers and computer gamers may find themselves in a situation in which they have to stick to the computer mouse, despite the advantages of the touchpad. This is perhaps part of the reason why hard-core gamers never tend to choose a notebook as their primary computing device, without attaching an external mouse to it.
It is of paramount importance to bear in mind were the future of computing is headed. The line between notebooks and desktops is now becoming ever blurred, which is even being sped up with the usage of external touchpad devices. What was once seen as a piece of technology that was hoped to be eradicated from notebooks in favour of the computer mouse, the touchpad is now making a beautiful resurgence due to advancements in technology that not many critics or analysts could have predicted.
